What is a Binomial?
A binomial is a mathematical expression of two terms connected by addition or subtraction. Binomials often appear in the form of a + b or a – b, where a and b are algebraic expressions. The term “binomial” is derived from the Latin words “bi” meaning two, and “nomen” meaning name or term.
Binomial Examples
-
x+3 – This is a binomial where x and 3 are the two terms connected by addition.
-
2y−5 – In this binomial, 2y and 5 are the two terms connected by subtraction.
-
a^2 + 4a – Although this expression has two terms, it is not a binomial because it is a polynomial with more than two terms.
-
3x−2y – This is a binomial where 3x and 2y are the terms connected by subtraction.
-
4x^2 +7 – Similar to example 3, this is not a binomial because it has more than two terms.
