A coefficient is a numerical or constant factor that is multiplied by a variable or a product of variables in a term. In other words, it is the numerical part of a term that is being multiplied by one or more variables.
Coefficient Examples
In the term 3x, the coefficient is 3, and it is multiplied by the variable x.
In the term −2y, the coefficient is −2, and it is multiplied by the variable y.
In the term 7xy, the coefficient is 7, and it is multiplied by the variables x and y.
In the term 2a, the coefficient is 2 , and it is multiplied by the variable a.
In the term 4, which can be considered as 4×1, the coefficient is 4, even though there is no explicit variable.
