An illustration of a number line showing the absolute value of -4 and 2.
Absolute value is the distance from zero. The image demonstrates that both -4 and 2 are 4 and 2 units away from zero on the number line, respectively.

What is Absolute Value?

A real number’s absolute value represents that number’s non-negative value, essentially its distance from zero on the number line without considering the direction. This concept provides a way to quantify the size of numbers irrespective of their sign.

Here’s how it works:

  • If a number is positive or zero, its absolute value is the same as the number itself. For example, the absolute value of 5 is 5, denoted as \vert{5}\vert=5
  • If a number is negative, its absolute value is the positive version of that number. For instance, the absolute value of -5 is 5, denoted as \vert{-5}\vert=5

Application and Uses

The concept of absolute value is crucial in various mathematical and practical applications, as it represents the magnitude of a number without regard to its sign. This property is essential for determining the distance between numbers on a number line, enabling the measurement of deviations from a central point, regardless of direction.

In real-world scenarios, such as calculating the total distance traveled by an object moving in multiple directions or assessing financial profit and loss, which can be positive or negative, this mathematical concept helps simplify complex problems. It also plays a pivotal role in engineering and physics, where the magnitude of forces, regardless of their direction, is often more significant than the direction itself.

Absolute Value Examples

If x = -7,  then the absolute value of x is |x| = 7

If x = -5,  then the absolute value of x is |x| = 5

So, the absolute value essentially gives the “distance” of a number from zero, regardless of its sign.
