Binomial

A mathematical equation on a yellow background that shows the product of a binomial sum and a binomial difference equaling the difference of two squares.
The image displays the binomial theorem's specific case, where multiplying a binomial sum by a binomial difference results in the difference of squares.

What is a Binomial?

A binomial is a mathematical expression of two terms connected by addition or subtraction. Binomials often appear in the form of a + b or a  –  b, where a and b are algebraic expressions. The term “binomial” is derived from the Latin words “bi” meaning two, and “nomen” meaning name or term.

Binomial Examples

  1. – This is a binomial where and are the two terms connected by addition.

  2. – In this binomial, and are the two terms connected by subtraction.

  3. a^2 + 4a – Although this expression has two terms, it is not a binomial because it is a polynomial with more than two terms.

  4. – This is a binomial where and are the terms connected by subtraction.

  5. 4x^2 +7 – Similar to example 3, this is not a binomial because it has more than two terms.
